Facebook Marketing for Frederick Businesses

Get YOUR business on FACEBOOK NOW before your competitors do!!

What is Facebook and why does my Business need it?

Unless you've been living in a cave, you've heard of MySpace... well MySpace is for our children and FACEBOOK is for US.  Social Media is changing... well EVERYTHING

Social Media isn't only changing the Internet, it's putting newspapers out of business, forcing the TV and Cable News to incorporate it (or else get left in the dust), Social Media is making conventional Advertising OBSOLETE.

So what exactly IS meant by 'social media'?

Google the phrase: "What is social media" and the top listings that come up (the only listings that count ARE the top ones, who looks past the first page of Google?)... the first few descriptions of social media are rather cryptic:

  1. Social media are primarily Internet-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings. ...
  2. What is Social media?: an e-book by antony mayfield from iCrossing updated 01.08.08 ... an audience) social media is better seen as a two-way conversation. ..
  3. Social media is information content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. It is intended to facilitate ...

  4. I like the 4th listing in Google:
Social media are online communications in which individuals shift fluidly and flexibly between the role of audience and author. To do this, they use social software that enables anyone without knowledge of coding, to post, comment on, share or mash up content and to form communities around shared interests.
And I like the comments below that post, commenting is what separates 'social media' from 'obsolete media', a readers ability to: Interact, Respond To, To complain against... that is what makes social media, Social!

  1. I think the point about authors and audiences being fluid roles is exactly right for social media. What drives the ‘conversation’ is everyone’s ability to change out of the role of passive listener to active contributor.

As has been mentioned many time, you can no longer control your message. Once you post an idea, anyone else can take it and add, subtract, or re-shape the concept. It distributes the power to decide what to think about.
  2. Social Media is a strange brew of Technology + People + Organization + Freedom. Miss an ingredient, and you're cooking something different.
OK, so what makes a blog different (in most people's eyes) is that it's social, and what makes it social is the interaction or commenting that a blog can offer that a conventional website cannot.

Fair enough... so how's that help a business? And do we really WANT to encourage all that commenting, I mean didn't we just see in the above description something about people being able to COMPLAIN? Making complaints public doesn't sound very cost effective, does it?

Well fear not... there are other reasons for a business to want and need a blog (blogs are only a small but important part of what is known as social media), and almost all of that begins and ends with... Search Engine Ranking

Which leads us to... what is search engine ranking?

Where in Google is YOUR website positioned? Can your company website be found within the first ten listings or is it buried deep in the back recesses of Google?

A query on a crawler-based search engine often turns up thousands or even millions of matching web pages. In many cases, only the ten most "relevant" matches are displayed on the first page.

Naturally, anyone who runs a web site wants to be in the "top ten" results. This is because most users will find a result they like in the top ten. Being listed 11 or beyond means that most people are not likely to bother clicking "next" and "next"...

Google, AOL Search, MSN Live Search all provide 10 listings per search result page, Yahoo often displays the top 15 listings. If your company website is NOT found in the top 10, is there anything you can do about this? Yes, Virgina, there IS a Santa Claus... read on (I'll give you a hint, Santa performs SEO Magic in Frederick Maryland)
Early search engines suffered from abuse and ranking manipulation. To provide better results to their users, search engines had to adapt to ensure their results pages showed the most relevant search results, rather than unrelated pages stuffed with numerous keywords by unscrupulous webmasters.

Since the success and popularity of a search engine is determined by its ability to produce the most relevant results to any given search, allowing those results to be false would turn users to find other search sources. Search engines responded by developing more complex ranking algorithms, taking into account additional factors that were more difficult for webmasters to manipulate.
